Amanda Keil
Mezzo-Soprano and Writer
Mezzo-soprano Amanda Keil sings repertoire that spans over 800 years, from medieval chant to contemporary opera, Baroque monody to operatic mainstays. A former Resident Artist with Dicapo Opera Theatre, she has been seen as Nerone in L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, and the Fairy Queen in Iolanthe. She toured internationally with The Boston Camerata with the medieval story of Tristan and Isolde. Ms. Keil is the founder of Musica Nuova, a chamber ensemble that invigorates early music performances with staging, movement, and storytelling. She holds a masters degree in voice and historical performance from Boston University and a bachelors degree in French horn performance from The Hartt School.
A passionate performer of historical styles, Ms. Keil performed with The Boston Camerata, singing the role of Brangane in Tristan et Iseult, as told in medieval songs and poetry. The group performed in Boston and Paris, and the concert was later broadcast on WGBH Boston. That same year she returned to sing the role of Juno with Martin Pearlman as a guest artist with the Boston University Baroque Orchestra in the rarely-heard opera Semele by Eccles.
Hailed for its “flair for the dramatic and taste for unusual performance spaces,” (New York Times) Ms. Keil's chamber ensemble Musica Nuova has been selected by the Society for Historically Informed Performance (SoHIP) for their summer concert series, and has appeared on numerous concert series including the Midtown Concert Series (New York), Bates College (Maine), and Music on Norway Pond (New Hampshire). On the invitation of the US State Department, Musica Nuova performed at the International Early Music Festival in Riga, Latvia, and was the ensemble-in-residence at the Amherst Early Music festival. Amanda Keil has won support from The Anna Sosenko Assist Trust and the Open Meadows Foundation for this work.
As an oratorio soloist, Ms. Keil has sung Handel's Messiah with the
Canton Choral Society and Masterworks Chorale, with whom she
also performed Bach's Magnificat. An accomplished ensemble musician, Amanda Keil has sung with the Oregon Bach Festival, Boston Schola Cantorum, Lorelei Ensemble, Arcadia Players, Boston Secession, as well as historic churches such as Trinity Church Boston, the Church of the Advent in Boston, and St. Luke's in the Field in New York. She has studied Baroque ornamentation and performance with Stephen Stubbs, Ellen Hargis, Julianne Baird, and the New York Continuo Collective.
Amanda Keil also pursues an interest in contemporary music. She created the roles of Gwen Ifill and Hillary Clinton in the world premiere of Say it Ain't So Joe by Curtis K. Hughes, with Guerrilla Opera. Based on the 2008 vice-presidential debates, the opera received national press attention and was featured on WBUR radio. She is featured on the orginal cast recording, which will be available in late 2011. She sang Steve Reich's Tehillim with the Boston Conservatory New Music Festival, and she created the role of Artemis/Phaedo in the world premiere of the opera A Rooster for Asclepius by Peter Murray, with Juventas New Music Ensemble.
